Finding The Perfect Role Model

That is the goal. It’s the task set before us each winter and spring as we look for those shining stars who could provide an awesome example for the young people that attend camp each summer. A daunting task it is, but one we embrace with excitement, passion and urgency as we seek to find those up for the challenge and equipped to succeed. ‘The Perfect Role Model’ might seem a bit lofty, but that is the aim, the mindset if you will, as we comb through applications, sit through interviews, check references and consult with our Savior for those best suited to answer the call.

They’ve got to be cool, kind, compassionate and energetic. They have to have patience and enjoy working with kids. They are teachers, they are listeners, they are leaders. They can laugh at themselves. They know how to have fun and when to be serious. They are full of spirit and enthusiasm, always doing what they can to encourage those around them. They have a servant’s heart and a passion for their Savior. That’s what we are looking for – those worthy of being professional role models.

Many have said that being a camp counselor is the hardest job that you will ever love. It is tough. There’s very little time off and hardly any time for yourself. You give and give and give and give and give and give some more. It’s demanding work, a ton of responsibility for a college student, but often the most rewarding experience of their life. In the end, the counselors are exhausted – drained physically, emotionally and spiritually, but find peace and rest in the knowledge that they planted seeds and possibly changed a life. There’s a great sense of accomplishment and a satisfaction knowing that you gave every ounce of energy you had for those kids. What a wonderful job!

As owners, we know how vital and important our summer staff are in our success as a business and a ministry. As parents, we know how critical it is to be careful about who we allow to influence our children. Couple these together and we see that selecting our summer staff is probably one of the most crucial tasks of our entire year. For those of you considering camp this summer or those already signed up, here’s a glimpse of what goes into our decision process of selecting those all important role models for our campers.

First of all, prospects must submit applications answering several questions related to their faith, their testimony, their spiritual growth, their family background and their experience working with children. From there, we filter through the apps, looking for those that really stand out. We check several references from pastors, teachers, employers and friends to see how others view them. Finally, if the applicant passes through those steps with flying colors, we extend the offer of an interview. Those face to face meetings prove most valuable as we meet with each prospect for 1 and a half to 2 hours, extracting just as much information as possible to see if they might perform well in our setting. It’s a pretty intense process, start to finish, but we take each step seriously and make decisions with the utmost care. Most importantly, we spend time in prayer, earnestly seeking wisdom from the Lord as we try to fill each slot for the coming season.

Does the Perfect Role Model actually exist? Probably not, at least not here on this earth. But that won’t stop us from searching high and low for the best possible role models we can find to work with our campers this and every summer. You can most certainly count on that!

You`ve Got a Friend

Over the past few weeks I have had a heightened awareness of the value of friends. It all started on the 29th of January. As the day drew to a close, I logged in to the evil Social Empire, Facebook (this is a Stars Wars reference and a joke). There I found 98 “Happy Birthday” messages of some sort. Now I know that number is small compared to the number of “friends” many people have on FB and the number wasn’t really what was so significant to me. What was significant were the memories that came flooding back to me as I looked at the names of the people who posted. Some of them were just acquaintances, but the vast majority of those well-wishers had impacted my life in some way and from that point on I was to be a different person. I am the man I am today because of, first, my Savior, Jesus Christ, and second, the people who contributed so dearly to my life. I owe them a tremendous debt.

My friends come from different times, like high school and college. Some are currently in my life, like my friendships from church. But if I was forced to label one group of people as the most influential, it would have to be the ones I met at camp. There are many things about camp friends that make them so unique and it would take more than a blog post to talk about them all. I believe the most important attribute of a camp friendship is the unconditional love and acceptance that is available to each person. Camp is the best environment for children and young adults to comfortably be who they really are or want to be. Counselors boost camper confidence by pouring affirmation and acceptance into their minds. Campers catch this contagious spirit and join in the cheering and positive feedback. It is almost impossible to leave camp without a better sense of self-worth and the courage to be yourself; the person God intended for you to be. I believe camp is the best place to find the best you.

There are two scriptures that come to mind when I think about the value of friends. I think these verses aren’t just about the friend we have in Jesus, but are also speaking about earthly friends. The first is Proverbs 17:17 which says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” The second is also in Proverbs, and just in the next chapter, verse 24, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Real friends bring out the best in you, want the best for you, love you no matter what, and will stand by you at all times.

Many of you still keep in touch with the friends you made at camp over the years and I know they rank at or near the top of your list. Leave a comment and tell me what you think is so special about your camp friendships. In the meantime, enjoy this throwback song from James Taylor. I don’t think I could say it much better…

Love, What Does It Really Mean?

I remember when I was in school, the teacher would send home a list of all of my classmates to make sure that no one was left out of the Valentine’s Day festivities. I would take the list home and carefully write the name of a friend on each one. Then I would come to the name of the girl who was always mean to me and called me names. She always bullied me and threatened to start a fight. Why should I write her name down? She wasn’t nice to me; my teacher wouldn’t know; and I was sure that others wouldn’t be giving her a valentine either.

Then I was reminded by the spirit of Luke 6:27.   “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.”  It goes on to say in verse 8, “pray for those who abuse you.”   So that’s what I began to do.  I began to actually pray for her.  I asked the Lord to show me how I could love her.  Our conflict escalated to a point where I had to tell an adult and we met with the school principle and the school counselor together.  As it turns out, her negative attitude and behavior toward me was an expression of the hurt and loss that she felt over the recent passing of her mother.  I began praying that the Lord would comfort her and would give her peace.  By praying for this ‘enemy’ I began to truly love her and care about her.

My family moved the following year, and I had to transfer schools.  I don’t know if my prayers or love made a difference in her life.  I do know that they made a difference in mine.  I looked at people differently.  She taught me that sometimes the outward actions of others are a result of inner hurt and what they really need is to be loved.

We all have people in our lives that we may not get along with.  They may get on our nerves or be unkind to us.  I want to challenge you to change your mindset this Valentine’s Day.  Instead of allowing yourself to be annoyed or hurt, choose love.  Start praying for that person.  Don’t just ask God to change them, but really pray for them.  You never know what they may be going through.  Ask God to show you how to love and to give you the ability to see others as He does.

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.  And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.  Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude.  It does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.  Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never ends.” -1 Corinthians 13:1-8a

Great To Be a Bowl Pick Winner!

It’s hard to believe that football season has come and gone. Thanks to all that participated in our 2011 Bowl Bonanza Contest. The race was tight, and the leader board changed several times during the season. Daniel “Bacon” Redding was able to hold on to his title as office champion for the 2nd year in a row!

Thomas “T-Bone” Dunagan, John Lloyd, Charlie Flint, James Knight, Whitney “Pistol” Carani, and Mary Beth “Trip” Brannon were all able to pick more winners than Bacon! A special treat from the Outpost was mailed to them!

T-Bone was the 2011 Bowl Picks Champion, picking 27 winners in the 35 bowl games.

In the Pride of the Tribe spirit, T-Bone handed his 15% tuition discount down to John Lloyd, father of last years champ, Mary Katherine Lloyd.

Charlie Flint, father of Chip Flint placed second while James Knight, Pistol, and Trip tied for third.

In addition to his prizes, Mr. Lloyd also earned 2000 points for the Awahili tribe to be awarded during Mary Katherine’s session this summer! Congratulations to all of our winners. Be on the lookout for your prizes. They are in the mail!

Bowl Bonanza Contest, Final Standings

Well, the final whistle has blown on the 2011-12 Bowl Season as Alabama owned LSU’s Jordan Jefferson all night and the Tide captured another National Title. LSU’s quest for a perfect season fell short as the Alabama defense simply smothered the Tiger’s throughout this contest.

With that, our contest comes to a close and our final standings are complete. We had a staff member take the top spot, so we are still working on combing through the fine print to dole out our prize packages, but didn’t want to leave you all hanging. Here’s a look at where many of you finished up:

The Office Crew:
Bacon: 24-11
Rambo: 21-14
Rebecca: 19-16

The Rest:

Bowl Picks Update, Day 17

The GoDaddy.com bowl is in the books and the Huskies from Northern Illinois prevailed. Arkansas State jumped out to an early lead and a 13-0 edge, but the Huskies woke up and rolled out 31 unanswered points. By then, it was too late for the Red Wolves to regain control.

Only one game left. The Big One, so check out our latest standings and enjoy the game.

The Office Crew:
Bacon: 24-10
Rambo: 21-13
Rebecca: 18-16

The Rest:
1st place: 26-8 – T-Bone, Charlie Flint
2nd place: 25-9 – Trip, John Lloyd
3rd place: 24-10 – James Knight, Pistol, Nike, Robin Dent

Last game of the season tonight with the National Championship on the line. Should be a great rematch so forget the controversy, accept reality and enjoy the final college football game of the year. I’m hoping for a dandy. I picked LSU but this could easily go either way. Enjoy!!

Bowl Picks Update, Day 16

I have to be honest and let you know I didn’t see even one minute of the SMU / Pitt contest. I’ve not even witnessed any highlights yet. All I know is that SMU jumped out to a 21-3 lead early in this one and their defense held strong, allowing only 3 more points to help the Mustangs secure the victory. I also heard that this was win number 100 for the SMU coach, so a big win for those guys.

We finally saw some movement at the top today, so check out our latest standings:

The Office Crew:
Bacon: 24-9
Rambo: 20-13
Rebecca: 17-16

The Rest:
1st place: 25-8 – T-Bone, Charlie Flint, Trip, John Lloyd
2nd place: 23-10 – James Knight, Susan James, Pistol, Nike, Caitlin Weed, Robin Dent, Becky Martin, Baylor Rainbow
3rd place: 22-11 – Erin Esping, Mary Katherine Lloyd, Lee Wall, Kelsey Weed, Kirsten Weed, Aaron Sims, David Martin, Snaps

Notables: T-Bone and Trip moved back into a 4-way tie for 1st place as they picked correctly today while our 2 leaders stumbled. Two games left to see if we can get some separation at the top.

Next up, Northern Illinois takes on Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. Both teams are coming into the game riding solid win streaks. Arkansas State will have to see how the team responds to the loss of their head coach. Since I picked them, I’m hoping these guys play hard to showcase their talent for the new head coach who will be watching from the press box. Tune in Monday to see how we all did in this one.

Bowl Picks Update, Day 15

The Cotton Bowl featured two fairly solid teams in Arkansas and Kansas State. They both got off to a pretty slow start offensively as each teamed struggled to even get a first down for much of the first half. Arkansas took the momentum swing with a punt return for a touchdown and outlasted K-State efforts at a comeback. The Razorbacks tie their school record for most wins in a season and complete quite an impressive year for their program.

For the second day in a row, no change in the top 3. Everyone in those 3 positions picked up a win this time. Here’s the updated standings:

The Office Crew:
Bacon: 23-9
Rambo: 20-12
Rebecca: 17-15

The Rest:
1st place: 25-7 – Charlie Flint, John Lloyd
2nd place: 24-8 - T-Bone, Trip
3rd place: 22-10 – James Knight, Susan James, Pistol, Nike, Mary Katherine Lloyd, Lee Wall, Kelsey Weed, Caitlin Weed, Aaron Sims, Robin Dent, Becky Martin, David Martin, Baylor Rainbow

Notables: Pretzel has shown one of the worst falls from glory as she spent several days on the leaderboard early in the contest and now finds herself near dead last in our rankings. I believe her quote after submitting her picks went something like “I just entered my picks. I’ve got this in the bag… No point in the rest of you even filling it out.” Be careful what you put in print, Pretzel!

This afternoon we have a match up between SMU and Pitt. Most of the us don’t know a lot about these 2 programs, but they both have some storied football roots. Pitt had a horrible stretch in October, but finished their season a little stronger. SMU had one big win against TCU, and a decent season. Not much hype about this game, but it still counts in our contest, so root for your team and check back in to see the standings tomorrow.

Bowl Picks Update, Day 14

E.M.B.A.R.R.A.S.S.I.N.G! It was bound to happen at some point in the bowl season, but no one could have ever seen this coming. Clemson’s rise to glory under Dabo Swinney just hit a huge brick wall. Shock and awe. Props to the Mountaineers for putting together their best game of the year, and condolences to the Tiger fans who walk away from the best season in recent history with a horrible performance to mull over for the next 9 months.

No change in the top 3 other than everyone picking up a loss. Only 3 people in our entire contest picked this one correctly. One of those is a huge South Carolina fan who probably just couldn’t bring himself to pull for Clemson. Here’s the updated standings:

The Office Crew:
Bacon: 22-9
Rambo: 19-12
Rebecca: 16-15

The Rest:
1st place: 24-7 – Charlie Flint, John Lloyd
2nd place: 23-8 - T-Bone, Trip
3rd place: 21-10 – James Knight, Susan James, Pistol, Nike, Mary Katherine Lloyd, Lee Wall, Kelsey Weed, Caitlin Weed, Aaron Sims, Robin Dent, Becky Martin, David Martin, Baylor Rainbow

Notables: First time in Bowl Bonanza history that over 95% of us took a loss in the same game. The sad part is that we all took a beating, not even close.

We get a break tonight, which apparently we all need. Next up, the Cotton Bowl, featuring Kansas State vs. Arkansas. Kansas State had a banner year for their program and are looking to go out with a victory. Arkansas is very solid, with their only 2 losses coming to LSU and Alabama. If they win this game, it would be a perfect ending to their own storybook season. In our contest, 84% of us are pulling for the Razorbacks.
